Personal Trainer & Bootcamp Instructor
Michael Johnson was born in North Carolina and relocated to Jersey City, NJ as a youth. He started to be active in sports from running track while younger to playing High School football as a teen. He was offered scholarships for 2 colleges in 1975 when tragedy struck his family and he lost his mother to cancer, putting his college football dreams on hold. Several months later, he decided to join the U.S. Army and within 3 years of service was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. It was at this time, Mike was able to utilize his football skills again for the Army/Navy team and also joined the Army boxing team.
In 1980, he decided he wanted to push the envelope and challenge himself, so he became a Drill Sergeant and found it to be one of the most rewarding experiences because it allowed him to train young men from the streets and mold them into better people and then soldiers. He served our country in Desert Storm and the War on Terror on the home front. He has over 33 years of service and is currently retired at the rank of Command Sergeant Major.
Mike’s law enforcement experience started in 1987 when he attended the Essex County Police Academy where he was selected to be in charge of his class of 55 recruits. After graduating and being assigned to various positions within the agency, he realized how important it was to stay in top physical condition so that he would not get injured while performing his duties. He began working out 3 times a week and later became a personal trainer at the same gym. 15 years after graduating from the academy, he went back to the Essex County Police Academy as a Senior Drill Instructor and began the work of putting together the best physical fitness program seen in the state of NJ for police and correction officer recruits. He has served in law enforcement for over 25 years and currently holds the position of Detective.
